certificate field

Issuer

What it means

Who signed (vouched for) this certificate — usually a certificate authority like Let's Encrypt or DigiCert. When issuer and subject are identical, the certificate is self-signed.

Why it matters

Trust flows from the issuer. If the issuer isn't in the client's trust store (directly or through a chain), the certificate is rejected — that's what 'unable to verify the first certificate' means.
