certificate field
Self-signed
What it means
The certificate is signed by its own key — issuer and subject are the same entity. All root CAs are self-signed; so are quickly-generated dev certificates.
Why it matters
Self-signed is fine for a trusted root or a lab; on a public website it means every visitor sees a security warning, because nobody independent vouches for it.
