An .mp4 file is a video container in the MPEG-4 format — the closest thing digital video has to a universal standard. Phones record to it, every platform plays it, and when something video-related doesn't work, the cause is almost always the CODECS inside the container rather than the container itself: an .mp4 typically holds H.264 video and AAC audio (plays literally everywhere), while newer H.265/HEVC video (common from iPhones and 4K cameras) needs codec support that stock Windows sometimes lacks — the symptom is audio-without-video or an error naming HEVC, and the free fix is the VLC player or Microsoft's HEVC extension. A corrupted .mp4 (interrupted recording or copy) often fails entirely because the index (moov atom) sits at the end of the file; recovery tools exist but prevention (letting recordings finalise) beats cure. Metadata-wise, phone videos can embed creation time and GPS location, the moving-picture cousin of JPEG's EXIF story.
