A .pdf file is a fixed-layout document — the format you reach for when a page must look identical everywhere, which is why invoices, forms, manuals and scans all travel as PDF. Every modern browser opens PDFs natively (Edge and Chrome are perfectly good viewers), so a separate reader is optional; Adobe Acrobat Reader remains the full-featured standard for forms and signatures. PDFs deserve one clear-eyed security paragraph: the format supports embedded JavaScript, launch actions and embedded files, and PDF-reader vulnerabilities have historically been a real infection route — 'a PDF can't hurt you' is folklore, not fact. In practice the browser viewers are well-sandboxed and the risk from a random PDF is low, but a PDF that asks you to click through to 'unlock' content, or one arriving with a password in the same email (scanner evasion again), earns suspicion. Editing PDFs is famously awkward by design — for real editing you want the original document, or tools built for the job.
