About the format
A .rar file is an archive in the proprietary RAR format — long popular for large downloads because of good compression, built-in recovery records (a damaged RAR can often be repaired), and easy splitting into multi-part volumes (.part1.rar, .part2.rar or the older .r00/.r01 series — you need ALL parts present, then extract the first one). Creating RARs legally requires WinRAR (the eternal shareware with the 40-day trial that never quite ends), but extracting them is free everywhere: 7-Zip handles RAR, and Windows 11's Explorer gained native RAR extraction in 2023. One honest caution specific to the format's popularity: WinRAR itself has had serious security vulnerabilities exploited via crafted archives, so if you use WinRAR, keep it updated — it has no auto-updater, and old versions have been a real infection vector. The general archive rule applies on top: the .rar is the envelope; inspect what comes out of it before running anything.
