About the format
An .heic file is a photo in the High Efficiency Image Container — the format iPhones have shot by default since 2017, storing images with the HEVC codec at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPEG, plus niceties like live photos and depth data. The catch is compatibility: Windows needs codec support to open HEIC (the 'HEIF Image Extensions' from the Microsoft Store — the companion HEVC video extension has been the paid/awkward one historically), and plenty of older software, web forms and printing kiosks simply reject the format. Hence the standard workarounds: convert to JPEG when sharing (Windows Photos can Save As JPEG once the codecs are installed; scores of converters exist), or stop the problem at the source by setting the iPhone camera to 'Most Compatible', which switches capture back to JPEG. Like JPEG, HEIC photos carry full EXIF metadata including GPS location — the sharing-privacy consideration is identical.
